June 2014 Activity Report


June was a very busy month for volunteers at Light for Children.

At the beginning of June, nine students from the University of Hong Kong arrived. Seven of them are volunteering with the Preventive Child Sexual Assault workshops in the schools, and two are teaching Information and Computer Technology (ICT) at the newly-opened Education Center in Atonsu.

Yaw Otchere attended a meeting of the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition from the 22nd to 24th of June. The meeting aimed to empower local businesses, assembly members, and NGO’s to engage in development with transparency and accountability.

Yaw also attended a meeting to discuss ways to improve reliable access to electricity in a financially and environmentally responsible way.

At the beginning of June, six students from Spelman University in the US arrived as part of a new partnership with GlobeMed. The students worked with the Preventive Child Sexual Abuse program, as well as School Health.

Four nursing and medical students from Denmark arrived in June and volunteered at Mampong Municipal Hospital. They were joined by an American medical intern as well.

Signe Nielsen of Denmark has been volunteering at Touch A Life, a home for children rescued from illegal labour in the fishing industry. She has also been teaching ICT at the Education Center.

Another group of students from Hong Kong, BTP, arrived to build toilet facilities in villages, Two different groups will be working on this project in June and July.
