January/February 2015 Activity Report

Light for Children participated in a number of public events and meetings in January and February.

One of these was a public lecture on Public Financial Management Procurement and Asset Management presented by SPEFA (Public Financial Management Procurement and Asset Management) The purpose of the lecture was to bring ordinary citizens and civil society up to speed about the workings or the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly.

Similarly, Light for Children attended a meeting of the Local Accountability Network (LANET), supported by the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition. This meeting’s purpose was to promote active participation in local government with an emphasis on fairness and transparency in development.

The Orphans and Vulnerable Children’s Committee, of which Light for Children is a member, met in February to review the previous year’s interventions and progress made so far.

We were happy to welcome two volunteers during this time. Jeanet Sjømann Hansen and Nicolaj Jacobsen, both of Denmark, arrived in January.

Jeanet volunteered at the Oxford Basic School in Nsuta, where she taught a wide range of subjects including English, geography and social studies.

Nicolaj volunteered at Mampong Babies Home. He was one of the only volunteers there, but also the only male on staff. Nicolaj did a great job of rising to the challenges of this situation.

Both of these volunteers were greatly appreciated at their placements, and they will be missed.
