At the end of July, we said goodbye to our American and British volunteers.

In August, we were joined by Katrine Halling Liljedahl of Denmark, who came to Ghana to volunteer at the Mampong Babies Home for eight weeks.

Our program coordinator Mike Owusu also got a chance to visit with the children at the Babies Home in August.

At the end of August, the Ghana NGO Coalition on the Rights of the Child offered a week-long camp as part of their Girl Power Project. One hundred girls aged 15 to 17 participated. The mentors were women from poor backgrounds who have succeeded as doctors, lawyers, nurses, engineers or queen mothers.

The girls were eager to talk to this doctor about her own path to success.

The program consisted of group discussions and focus groups encouraging the girls not to give up on pursuing their goals, and to stay focused on their education.

Many girls in Ghana still dream of making their way by marrying someone big and important. Mike encouraged them to dream instead of becoming someone big and important themselves.

Mike and Light for Children Executive Director Yaw Otchere attended a meeting of the Ghana Anti Corruption Coalition (GACC). This coalition is composed of NGOs and community leaders throughout the country. At this meeting LANET, the local anti-corruption organization, reported their own recent activities in a district of the Ashanti region.

Susanne Sandquist sponsors three girls through Light for Children's sponsorship program. The money she sends allows the girls to receive medical treatments and covers school fees and other expenses. All three girls are working hard and excelling in school.
